Have An Attitude...of FUN!

A Piece of Chocolate Week 21, Feb.14, 2008 Have an attitude…of FUN! Anyone who knows me knows that I love to have fun. When I die, I imagine my epitaph would say: Dede loved the Lord and having fun. My hubby used to say, “Dede, if you could get paid to have fun we’d be millionaires”. It’s true. One of the most fun times as an adult that I remember having, was when my closest girlfriends from Vandenberg Air Force Base and I would get together and play either Cranium or Mad Gab. Every time we’d play, someone would be on the verge of having a “laughing accident”. You know, when you laugh so hard that you accidentally start to… you’ve got the picture. Another time more recently, was when a dear friend of mine from out here in Virginia and I were on the phone analyzing the word “retard”. I promise you that we weren’t making fun of anyone other than me. See, when I was little, I was so delayed that the docs really did think that I was mentally retarded. I don’t think that they expected me to become a nurse. Anyway, being “slow” plays such a part of who I am today. I am able to pull things apart that typically aren’t analyzed, and make people who run through life slow down just a bit, let their hair down, and laugh. Is it important to have fun? You may say- “Dede, who has time to have fun? I mean, when my day is over, all I want to do is go to bed!” I can totally relate. However, I think that having fun is not just about what you are doing to have fun, it’s a frame of mind. Tell me if this is true. If you are cranky when you wake up, isn’t there a possibility that the rest of your day could be crummy? Likewise, (even if you aren’t a morning person), if you can have an attitude that reflects a positively fun demeanor won’t your day at least have the potential to be great? Yes! I believe that God has planted in each of our hearts that one special thing that we love to do for fun. Fun for King David was singing. Fun for Nehemiah was building. Peter loved to fish, Solomon loved to rule, and Jesus loves to love. God made us in such a way that “fun” is part of our heritage! He knew that the stresses of today would demand an outlet. So, what’s your outlet? Hitting your hubby over the head with a frying pan can’t count no matter how much he‘s driving you crazy. What do you enjoy doing? Singing, dancing, baking, drawing, reading, exercising, taking a candle lit bubble bath alone without any of the kids screaming in the background…? God loves fellowship with you and I. Doesn’t it make sense that as much as He enjoys watching us, that he would allow us to enjoy some fun of our own without feeling guilty? I think so! There are so many scriptures in the Bible about being glad, rejoicing, celebrating, enjoying…and so on. God cares about pleasure. If he cares about you when you’re sad you can be sure that he cares about you when you’re glad! He wants you to be satisfied by Him first and foremost. The Bible says “Rejoice in the Lord always and again I say rejoice” I love to rejoice in the Lord through singing. Not only because He is worthy of my praise, but also since He knew I’d have the time o’ my life doin’ it. Now go out and have yourself some fun! Love, Dede
